Pay as you go

13 May 2016

West Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with local bus companies Keighley and District and TLC are launching a new MCard ‘Pay As You Go’ option from Monday 16 May.

White MCard Pay As You GoAdult single, return or day tickets

From Monday, passengers will be able to pre-load a new white MCard and use it to buy any adult single, return or day tickets on Transdev in Keighley and TLC’s bus services. They can also be used to buy the companies’ own products such as K-day and the TLCDay ticket.

The new white MCards and cash top-ups are available from Bus Station Travel Centres  across West Yorkshire from Monday.

To use the Pay As You Go MCard, passengers need to tell the driver their destination and the type of ticket they want and touch their white MCard on to the bus ticket machine. Their fare will be deducted and they will receive a paper ticket for their journey or journeys. The paper ticket will also tell them the cash balance left on their card.

Convenient alternative

West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee Chair Cllr Keith Wakefield said, “Pay As You Go on MCard is ideal for those people who use buses but not regularly who can get a white MCard pre-load it with as little as £5 and then keep it in their wallet or purse for if and when they do need to catch a bus.

“It’s the convenient alternative to cash facility and means people no longer need to worry about having change for their bus fare. And because the Pay As You Go MCard is not a PhotoCard, it can be used by a number of people, although not on the same journey.

“Companies whose employees sometimes have to use buses will no doubt find it useful to have one or two pre-loaded Pay As You Go MCards in the drawer for anyone to use.”

Alex Hornby, CEO for Transdev said: “We want to make customers’ journeys as easy as possible. Research shows people are carrying less change around with them, and therefore pre-loading on to a smartcard will make it more convenient for customers as well as speeding up boarding and journey times.

“We’ve worked closely with WYCA and all operators across West Yorkshire to make this happen, and this is further evidence of our commitment to working in partnership and improving the service for our customers."

Barry Cliff GM from TLC said; “We welcome any new product that makes travel easier for passengers and as we all move forward in many ways of our daily life to cashless systems, what better way than to have the MCard Pay As You Go for bus services.

“We are extremely excited to be involved with the roll out in Keighley from day one and look forward to the product being available for use with other operators across the district in the near future.”

After the initial launch period on Transdev in Keighley and TLC’s bus services, the Pay As You Go MCard will be available on all West Yorkshire bus services from July. Passengers will also be able to pre-load their Pay As You Go MCard at West Yorkshire’s 700-plus Payzone outlets.

And, later this year Pay As You Go will also be available on children and young people’s PhotoCards and on concessionary passes for people who want to travel outside concessionary hours, such as people with a Senior Pass, wanting to catch the bus before 9.30am.

Further plans include ‘capping’ which ensures passengers will not pay more than the price of a single day ticket for their day’s journeys.
